Negative Thoughts Are Holding You Back
Sometimes, you can be your own biggest obstacle without even realising it.
You think about trying something new.
Then a thought appears.
“What if I fail?”
You consider speaking up.
“Maybe they’ll think I’m not good enough.”
You make a small mistake.
“I always mess things up.”
Before long, a single thought becomes a whole chain of negative thinking.
And the more you think about it, the more real it starts to feel.
You may start wondering:
“Why can’t I stop thinking this way?”
The problem isn’t that you have negative thoughts.
Everyone does.
The problem can be when those thoughts start controlling what you do.
When Your Thoughts Start Making Decisions for You
Negative thoughts can be convincing.
You remember something that went wrong in the past.
You imagine everything that could go wrong in the future.
You compare yourself with someone else.
You focus on what you haven’t achieved rather than what you have.
And slowly, you begin making decisions based on fear.
You don’t apply for the opportunity.
You don’t start the project.
You don’t have the conversation.
You don’t take the first step.
Not because you don’t want to.
But because your thoughts have already convinced you that something will go wrong.
You Don’t Have to Believe Every Thought
When a negative thought appears, you don’t have to immediately fight it.
Instead, pause.
Notice what you’re thinking.
Then ask yourself:
“Is this actually true, or is this what I’m afraid might happen?”
There is a difference.
You may think:
“I’m going to fail.”
But you don’t actually know that.
You may think:
“I’m not good enough.”
But that doesn’t make it a fact.
Try giving yourself another possibility.
“I don’t know how this will turn out, but I can try.”
You don’t have to replace every negative thought with a positive one.
You simply need to stop treating every thought as the truth.
Your mind can raise doubts.
It can remind you of your fears.
But you still get to decide what you do next.
A thought can hold your attention.
It doesn’t have to hold you back.
A final thought
If you're feeling stuck despite doing everything you can, try giving yourself the same patience and understanding you would give someone you care about.
You don't have to solve your whole life today.
