Feeling Stuck Even Though You’re Trying Your Best

Anxiety · 2 min read

There are times when you’re doing everything you can.

You’re getting through the day. You’re trying to make better choices. You’re thinking about what needs to change. Maybe you’re working harder, trying to stay positive, or doing your best to keep everything together.

And yet, somehow, you still feel stuck.

It can be frustrating. Especially when you can’t point to one obvious thing that’s wrong.

You may even start wondering:

Why am I still feeling like this when I’m trying so hard?

The answer isn’t necessarily that you’re not trying hard enough.

Sometimes, trying harder isn’t what you need.

Sometimes, you need to stop for a moment and understand what is keeping you where you are.

When Trying Harder Doesn’t Help

We often respond to feeling stuck by doing more.

  • More planning.
  • More worrying.
  • More analysing.
  • More attempts to fix ourselves.

But anxiety can make this cycle particularly difficult.

The more you try to find the perfect solution, the more possibilities you create to worry about.

You think about what might happen.

Then you think about what could go wrong.

Then you think about how you should have handled something differently.

Before long, you’re exhausted from trying to solve problems that haven’t even happened yet.
Being busy with your thoughts can feel like you’re making progress.

But sometimes, you’re simply going around in circles.

You Don’t Have to Figure Everything Out Today

When you’re feeling stuck, it’s tempting to believe that you need a complete plan before you can move forward.

You need to know what you’re going to do.

You need to know whether it will work.

You need to know what happens next.

But life rarely works that way.

You don’t always get certainty before you take action.

Sometimes clarity comes after you take the first step.

Instead of asking yourself:

“How am I going to fix everything?”

Try asking:

“What is one small thing I can do today?”

It might be something very simple.

Make the phone call you’ve been avoiding.

Go for a walk.

Write down what’s actually worrying you.

Talk honestly to someone you trust.

Or give yourself permission to rest.

A small step is still a step.

A final thought

If you're feeling stuck despite doing everything you can, try giving yourself the same patience and understanding you would give someone you care about.

You don't have to solve your whole life today.

You just need to give yourself enough space to take the next step.
